Ban music genres?

An eclectic
A person who derives ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources

If you like what you hear, who is the arbiter of taste to tell you it's no good? Possibly of more note, why do most radio stations, music magazines and often television shows so narrowly pigeon hole music to limit their output to some subjective and narrow spectrum of type? Well, I guess broadcasting companies bow to pressure from executives concerned with advertising revenue, persuaded that they must target a certain demographic to achieve success and then there's the hidden links to publishing companies and their pluggers and the oh-so-limited 'playlists'.

Granted, the choice to us, the all important listener in this digital age, is seemingly endless but we're still reliant on the push-out rather than the pull-in. We're fed but we're not self sufficient.

Now, without the broadcasts, publications and host of programmes, the world would be a sorry place and of course we do need to be informed BUT speaking as someone who has struggled to always embrace social media and new technology (downloads - pah!), I hold my hands up and shout hallelujah! for...

STREAMING

For me, there's not enough time in the day to play all the music I want to listen to.
I WANT IT ALL!

My music listening is not seemingly restricted to pre-set genres and flits around without apparent direction but I do know I'm the navigator. If I want to listen to a radio station, that's my choice; play a CD, take out a vinyl copy from my hoard - again my prerogative - BUT - albeit a late comer to the party, music streaming allows me freedom to roam but with so many signposts available, off to familiar havens or strange new lands.

My passion / favoured pastime / brain exerciser is to absorb as much peripheral information, background and trivia as my diminishing memory will retain about the music I play and the links that exist...
from track - to track - to album - to artist - to label - to venue - to recording - to cover - to artwork

It's the 6 degrees of separation theory - not so much a menu as one big stew pot

I am a music streamer - I am an eclectic

Someone once wrote, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture".

Well, not having tried the paso doble around a portico or the lindy hop on a lintel, I'm guessing it may be more acceptable to just have a natter about music...

Music (or shall I say, the listening, reading, looking, collecting, cherishing, learning, discovering, discussing and marvelling involved with music) is an obsession to me, not just a hobby - be that good, bad or indifferent - it just is!
